I'm so happy to get an update on the award and hope that you will be happy with the process at UTampa. As a proud graduate of an Honors Program, I can say that such places are very special for bright, motivated people--just as Tim was.

I have been thinking a lot about Tim as the anniversary of his death draws closer. When I found out Tim was gone almost two years ago, I was 4 months pregnant with my son and it had been a couple of years since I had seen Tim. I had thought we would have plenty of time to meet up in London or Prague or wherever. Now my son is almost 19 months old. It's crazy how fast the time goes.

Mary, Marty, and Brian, thanks so much for your work on this. I know that Tim would be so happy to know that he was helping people expand their minds through travel. I still miss him but know he is with us in his own way.

Our family has every desire to continue giving an award for creative writing to an undergraduate so they can also get inspiration though travel as did Tim. Tim loved travel and it just seemed to inspire him which is evident with his writings and pictures that we have put on this site.

We desire a more personal approach to this award and want the student that receives this award to appreciate the value of what we are trying to achieve.

Therefore, we plan on giving the 2005 Inspiration through Exploration Award in memory of Timothy M. Smith to an undergraduate at the University of Tampa. We will start the process of selecting the recipient so that the award can be given for travel over the summer of 2005.

Our desire is to also look into other channels that will help young people grow in the area of their creative writing. If any of you reading this have ideas, please feel free to e-mail us at msmith1@sprintmail.com.

Thank you - The Smith Family

I met a lady on the airplane. She was with her husband, he didn't talk much. Quite frankly I thought he might request a seat change because I managed to tell this lady more about my life than anyone would care to know, before the plane even took off! She told me things, I told her things, she cared, I cared.

She wore a bright colorful shirt, very cheerful, I think I noted six colors at least. Her husband reminded me ironically of a writer. I wanted to talk, felt compelled to write about my experience with this wonderful motherly like woman, instead I would choose to talk. Finally, after emotional exhaustion and a pitted feeling in my stomach of slight embarrassement, for having told this lady all my problems, I went to sleep.

She told me about three special people in her life. Two of them had her heart and soul. One of them had her heart, had run off with it somewhere, shoved it in a drawer, and continued to torment this poor lady on a daily basis, this wasn't her husband. She told me about her memories, camping, spontaneous trips, about how she decided to take Christmas vacations with her children when they were younger instead of buying toys, and most of all, she told me about how money wasn't everything. I am quite certain this was just her trying to make me feel better though.

Oddly enough, she was from NJ, where I am from, and she now lived in Florida, where I live. In contrast, she was happy about her life, experienced, and smart. Myself, a fool, inexperienced. It didn't matter though, she made me think, and she cared.

The last 5 minutes of our chat went something like this....

"I don't mean to bore you of all my problems, it's too much. Maybe one day, you'll read my book."

"You don't bore me honey." she said it mother like.

"You remind me of my mother, she was a hippie." she laughed

"Your writing a book?"

"Yeah, I really love to write, it is my passion."

"You do?" she seemed proud, happy, and sad all at once. I didn't understand. Then she told me, and she cried. Her husband gave her "the look", she stopped and regained her strength to motherly like status again.

"Can I give you a website to look at?"

She wrote it down. www.ispirationthroughexploration.com

The inagural "Timothy Martin Smith Creative Writing Award" was presented at the May assembly program at Tulane University. The award was given to a graduating senior for international travel this August. At the completion of her travels she will write of her experiences and these writings as well as the entry writings will be added to this site. We thank everyone who has contributed to this award as you have all helped to make this scholarship possible. We plan to continue this scholarship for some time, as our goal is to give other students the opportunity to experience and grow through international experiences. Thank you all! The Smith Family

Thank you all for visiting!  We're confident the scholarship will continue to be a bright point for Tulane University the way Tim was for all of us. Enjoy the site and be sure to print and read some of Tim's stories; they're quite entertaining. Brian Smith

Mary, Marty, and Brian: You've done a wonderful thing with this award and site. It seems like the perfect remembrance of Tim, who is very much missed. I hope you will publish some of the stories that are written by students who win the awards. It would be great to see Tim's legacy in action. Best wishes, Nicole Rosenleaf Ritter
